Mo Scéal — My Story
I'm Siobhan, a community herbalist and cosmetic formulator, and Simple Herbal Remedies grew out of a lifelong love for the wild green corners of Donegal and the old knowledge carried in them.
I've been teaching for almost twenty years — it started with makeup and cosmetics, helping people understand their skin and how to care for it. But somewhere along the way, the ingredients themselves became the obsession. I started looking at what was growing around me here in Donegal and asking what it could do. That curiosity pulled me toward crafting my own skincare from the land, which led me to a Formula Botanica Diploma in Organic Skincare Formulation, and then deeper still — into the Plant Medicine School, where I trained as a community herbalist. I'm now completing my medical herbalism studies, and what began as a love of a good face cream has become a genuine, rooted practice in plant medicine.
That journey — from cosmetics counter to hedgerow — means I bring something a little unusual to this work. I know skin, I know formulation, and I know the plants. When someone comes to me with a skin concern, I'm not guessing. Every product I make is high-quality, thoughtfully crafted, and built on years of real botanical knowledge rather than trends or shortcuts.
Gaeilge runs through everything I do here. I call the plants by their old names — lus na leamhnachta, copóg phádraig, sailchuach — because language and land are tangled together, and something is lost when we only ever reach for the English. The Gaeilge name often tells us exacyly what yhe plant dies. The language is living out the doing. I spend a lot of time with history and folklore, and stories gathered from their elders all over Ireland, and I'm slowly weaving those threads into the knowledge about what our grandmothers knew.
You'll find me in the most beautiful and odd corners of Donegal — out at Beltany Stone Circle, wandering through Glenveagh, picking wild garlic along Batts Walk, or being the slightly unhinged woman cutting nettle tops in spring when everyone else is avoiding them. I teach workshops, al over but very often at The Well Lane in Ballybofey — skincare formulation, tallow balms, medicine making, botanical facial oils, wild tonics, herbal first aid , childrens fun and safe skincare— trying to put the hedge back within reach of people's own homes.
Simple Herbal Remedies is my way of keeping that knowledge alive and useful — not locked away in an archive, but on your kitchen shelf.
